AUTHOR GUEST POST: A Mad, Wicked Folly by Sharon Biggs Waller

Title: A Mad, Wicked Folly
Author: Sharon Biggs Waller
Publisher: Viking Juvenile
Pub Date: January 23, 2014
Genre: Historical Fiction/Romance
Age Group: Young Adult

The year is 1909. After seventeen-year-old Victoria Darling poses nude for her art class, she is expelled from her French finishing school and shipped back to London to live with her parents. To minimize the scandal Vicky has caused, her parents inform her that she is to marry the young man they have selected for her, Edmund Carrick-Humphrey. She is not to continue painting. Vicky knows little about Edmund but accepts the match, reasoning that she can use his money to pay for tuition at the Royal College of Art.
But things don’t go according to plan. Despite her engagement, Vicky develops an interest in the handsome young police constable William Fletcher, an aspiring novelist who encourages Vicky to pursue her dreams. She goes quickly from seeing Will as an artistic muse to seeing him as much more, all the while knowing that she could never be with a man so far below her class.
When Vicky becomes entangled with a group of suffragettes, she comes to realize that the constraints on her aspirations and independence don’t apply only to her—they apply to all women. But how can she fight for women’s equality and pursue the life that she wants without driving away everyone and everything that she’s known?

My A Mad, Wicked Folly Dream Cast

Victoria Darling: Bel Powley.  I love this up-and-coming British actress. Every time I see her I think, there’s Vicky! She looks like her, she has a posh accent like Vicky has, and she’s got a lot of attitude, yet she’s really refined.  She has so much expression in her eyes, too, and I think she could easily portray Vicky’s intensity.

Sophie Cumberbunch: Karen Gillan.  Didn’t you just love her as Amy Pond in Dr. Who? Plus she has red hair and she’s a former model, so she has Sophie’s flair for fashion.

Lucy Hawkins: Grace Gummer.  I loved Grace Gummer in Frances Ha, and she shares Lucy’s directness.

Edmund Carrick-Humphrey: Dominic Cooper.  Okay, how steamy hot is Dominic Cooper? I think we’ve said enough.  He’s Edmund.

Freddy Darling: Benedict Cumberbatch.  Benedict has just the right amount of snark needed to balance Vicky, yet he’s still kind.  Plus I adore his voice.  He’s also adorable, a perfect fit for a Darling sibling.

William Fletcher: Christian Cooke. If you have not yet laid eyes on this young British actor, go take a look.  I’ll wait.  He’s Will, right?

Mrs. Darling: Margaret Colin.  Margaret looks a lot like Bel Powley and I’ve always thought that Vicky’s mom should look like an older version of Vicky. She’s also very elegant, as is Mrs. Darling.

Mr. Darling: Colin Firth.  I love Colin Firth, he’s my favorite actor, and he’s great with difficult characters, and Mr. Darling is one tough cookie.
